Statement
Emotion has always been awkward, alienating, and exhausting. The recurring character in my work, ScatterBrain, is a look into my own emotional landscape without the barriers of the outside world. Portrayed with vibrant colors, large text, direct gazes, and big tears, her world is kitsch yet vulnerable, humorous but reflective. A world where we embrace the cheesiness that comes with emotion and we don't shy away from the truth of our feelings. In my experience, my emotional vulnerability yields burnout. While representing this occurrence in visual components, the practice of creating ScatterBrain is also reflective of this. By utilizing printmaking, a meticulous and repetitive art, the emotional experience is emulated. By including painting, a slow and easy going process, I directly reference the burnout.
The world of ScatterBrain, seen in both process and result, provides the audience with the opportunity to make light of their own emotional circumstance. It invites them to take a moment, and briefly exist in a universe where there are no rules when it comes to feeling.
